Photoshop Troubles?

I just downloaded the 30 day free trial of Photoshop CS2.

I'm totally confused on how to work the thing. I just want to make the images that are black %26 white, and one thing in the picture is color. I can't figure out how to do this! If you have any advice on doing this, or any tips on using Photoshop in general they would be greatly appreciated.

for Grayscale Image:

for using filters: Filter menu (use Filter Gallery! it's so easy)

it has been awhile since i used photoshop but i believ there is a color replacement tool set that to black or white not sure shich will do what you want the use it to go over all of the picture except the area you want left in color
